WTO Agreement on Agriculture
The agriculture sector continues to play a pivotal role in employment, rural development, food security and overall economic development in many countries.
Hence, the agriculture remains one of the most sensitive issues for negotiations in almost all trading arrangements. The WTO Agreement on Agriculture (AoA) lays down the rules governing global agriculture trade. The Agreement contains disciplines in 3 pillars on market access, domestic support and export subsidies.
The AoA establishes a Committee on Agriculture. The Committee oversees the implementation of the Agreement and affords Members the opportunity of consulting on any matter relating to the implementation of commitments, including rule-based commitments. For this purpose, the Committee usually meets four times per year, with special meetings if necessary.
The full text of the Agreement on Agriculture can be accessed here. The ‘AoA Series’ further contains the text of the Agreement and explanations to help understand the Agreement.
